Puma Gen-E and Power Promise strengthen Ford’s all-electric lineup
The city-friendly Puma Gen-E, backed by Ford’s new Power Promise, makes a compelling addition to the Blue Oval’s impressive electric offering...

Ford is no stranger to disrupting the way we move. The Model T brought motoring to the masses more than a century ago, providing versatile, affordable transport for a broad range of customer needs. Today, that same ethos underpins the company’s electric vehicle family – a five-model line-up strengthened by the arrival of the Puma Gen-E.
Ford’s impressive EV offering extends beyond the cars themselves, though. The brand has made a concerted effort to make switching to electric as simple as possible. The Ford Power Promise aims to do exactly that with a clever suite of services – built on customer feedback – to make electric driving effortless. Combined with the impressive new Puma Gen-E, it makes for quite the compelling offering. Especially considering the Puma Gen-E is the first of two Ford models to be offered with the £3,750 Government EV Car Grant1, meaning recommended on-the-road pricing starts from a very tempting £26,2452.

Ford Puma Gen-E
The Puma is the UK’s best-selling car, and that’s no surprise. It’s an athletic, city-friendly SUV that’s as good to drive as it is big on practicality. The Gen-E brings an all-electric option to the Puma lineup, while enhancing everything that’s made the petrol and mild-hybrid versions so popular.

Power and poise
Behind its unique, aerodynamic ‘shield’ grille – a nod to the Mustang Mach-E – the Puma Gen-E is equipped with a 167bhp electric motor and 43kWh lithium-ion battery, which is packaged under the rear seats. The result? Brisk performance. 0-62mph is covered in just 8.0sec3 while the healthy 290Nm of torque makes it incredibly responsive. What Car?’s roadtesters noted, “The Puma Gen-E is certainly nippy enough around town, with a strong, consistent amount of pulling power.”
The Gen-E retains the Puma’s signature agility in urban areas, with confidence-inspiring steering that's usefully light when parking. “The Gen-E proves more fun to drive than most electric SUVs, thanks to a sharp front end, good grip and very little body lean in corners,” adds What Car?. You can also enable one-pedal driving to make light work of traffic. Simply lift off the throttle, and it’ll slow down without reaching for the brake. And as a happy bonus, it’ll feed energy back into the battery to extend your range.

Comfortable and practical
On the inside, it’s easy to get comfy according to What Car?’s testers, “No matter which of the trims you go for, the driver's seat in the Ford Puma Gen-E is comfortable and comes with adjustable lumbar support.” Furthermore, the surrounding materials are easy on the eye and pleasing to touch, adding to the sense of quality and luxury.
One of the Puma’s strengths is its impressive interior flexibility – and that’s further enhanced by the move to electrification. With no petrol engine up front, Ford has packaged a 43-litre ‘frunk’ under the bonnet – ideal for storing charging cables. Rear loadspace has also increased, from 456 litres in the mild hybrid to 523 litres4 in the Gen-E, with a deep under-floor GigaBox compartment for carrying tall or bulky items, while the unique floating centre console liberates yet more storage in the cabin. Combined, the Puma offers a massive 566 litres of cargo storage – that’s more than some larger SUVs. “That much space actually makes it one of the biggest boots in the class, with the Gen-E managing to swallow a total of nine carry-on suitcases,” says What Car?’s test team.

Generously equipped
The Puma Gen-E is available in three trims, and spec is generous enough that we can even recommend the entry-level Select. That’s because every Puma comes with plenty of clever, useful features as standard. Select includes a 12-inch SYNC 4 touchscreen with a high-speed 5G connection for streaming music and live traffic data. It also includes wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, so you’ll have quick and easy access to your phone, including your favourite music and navigation apps. Also included as standard is a rear-view camera with rear parking sensors, making parking a breeze, and cruise control to take the strain out of longer journeys. A quick-clear heated windscreen saves you getting out the ice scraper on wintry mornings.
Stepping up to Premium adds some eye-catching goodies such as a premium 10-speaker B&O audio system that really adds some punch and clarity to your favourite tracks. You’ll also get convenient keyless entry/start, 18-inch alloy wheels, adaptive matrix LED headlights and power tailgate – handy when your hands are full of shopping bags. Top-spec Sound Edition includes unique styling details, such as black exterior highlights, synthetic leather upholstery, heated front seats and steering wheel, and advanced driver assistance features. Ford’s smallest SUV is big on selling points, then.

Effortless electric driving with the Ford Power Promise
The Puma Gen-E is efficient, too. The battery offers a range of up to 233 miles5 when fully charged with four selectable driving modes to dial in extra performance or maximise the range. And, if you’re going further, the Puma Gen-E can rapid charge from 10-80% in just 23 minutes6 – enough to take a quick comfort break and grab a snack.
Public charging is made extra easy thanks to Ford’s brilliant new Power Promise. Firstly, when putting a destination into the navigation system, the Puma Gen-E’s clever EV route planner will automatically include a charging stop if you’re driving particularly far. Or if you’re simply looking for an impromptu charge while out and about, you can still use the navigation system or the BlueOval Charge Network to find and pay for public charging at over 800,000 charge points across Europe, including 36,000 charge points in the UK. So you should be spoiled for choice.
But it’s not just about public charging. Last year, a Ford survey of 5000 drivers across Europe found that 25% of drivers were put off by the uncertainty and complexity of EV ownership. The Ford Power Promise is designed to alleviate all of those concerns. It’s about making the whole EV ownership process incredibly easy and hassle-free.
To start with, Ford can provide a free, smart home charger.7 And to sweeten that deal even further, Ford adds up to 10,000 miles of charging credit in partnership with Octopus Energy.8 So right from the off, the home charging solution is sorted.
Drivers also get peace of mind from an up to eight-year, 100,000 mile battery warranty9 and five years of Ford Roadside Assistance10, which includes towing to the nearest charging station in the incredibly unlikely event that you were to run out of charge. Maintenance is taken care of too with five years of free servicing and dedicated customer support.
It's a fantastically well-thought-out way of making the switch to EV a pleasant experience. And the great news is that the Ford Power Promise is available across Ford’s entire electric vehicle lineup.
