Toyota to axe 750 British jobs

Toyota is to axe 750 jobs at its Burnaston plant in Derbyshire by August of this year.

After a 'tough year' in 2009, Toyota said it needed to ensure a sustainable business for the long term.

The company said it had not yet decided how the jobs would go, but it was not currently considering compulsory redundancies.

Around 3800 people are employed at the factory, which makes the Auris and Avensis.

In April 2009, a workshare scheme was introduced that reduced workers' hours and pay. From August, the Burnaston plant will move from two assembly lines to just one.
