Toyota's electric and sports concepts

Toyota will unveil new sports and electric concept cars at the Tokyo motor show later this month.

The FT-86 sports car concept
'Great to own and fun to drive' is how Toyota describes its new FT-86 sports car.

The FT-86 has five seats and is powered through the rear wheels by a 2.0-litre engine.

Handling is enhanced and emissions are kept in check thanks to a compact design, lightweight construction and low centre of gravity.

The concept car is painted in Flash Red, while the interior is largely stripped out.

The FT-EVII electric concept car
The Tokyo motor show will also have the debut of the FT-EVII, a compact electric vehicle designed for short journeys.

Designed primarily for urban driving, the FT-EVII is built on a platform that's even more compact than the iQ's. However, Toyota says there's room for four adults.

Drive-by-wire technology allows the car to be controlled by a joystick, which includes controls for the accelerator, brakes and steering.

Toyota says that removing the traditional throttle and brake pedals frees up enough legroom for the four-seat design.

The car gets an extra window beneath the windscreen to give extra forward visibility, while all-round visibility is improved by rear light clusters that are see-through LED units.

Electric sliding doors are fitted on both sides for better access in tight spots.

The FT-EVII's top speed is around 60mph and a full charge will give a range of more than 50 miles.
