Two thirds of UK drivers don’t know when their next MOT is due, research finds
Less than one third of UK drivers know when their next MOT is due, with thousands of motorists turning to the internet for reminders, according to recent figures.
A recent survey conducted by car insurance experts esure found that 29.8% of its 2000 respondents knew the exact date their car’s next MOT was due – while one in five (21.4%) admitted to having missed booking their MOT on time.
The research also found that drivers have made more than 17,000 searches on Google to find out how to set up reminders for their next MOT.
Motorists driving a car without a valid MOT face a fine of up to £1000 – which can rise up to £2500 if your car is deemed dangerous, with the most common failure reasons being issues with suspension and tyres. You may also receive a driving ban and three penalty points on your license.
To avoid missing your MOT, it’s worth setting up an annual reminder so you don’t face a hefty fine. You can sign up to My What Car? for free MOT reminders, plus the ability to book an MOT online. For the ultimate convenience, our partners can even arrange to have your car collected and returned to you.
All cars must have an MOT by the third anniversary of their registration, and annually thereafter. You can only drive your car without an MOT under specific circumstances: when driving to and from a garage to get your car repaired, and when driving to a pre-arranged MOT test.
