Ford has a long history of making affordable fast cars, and the latest Focus ST shows that the lineage is in rude health.
Being based on the sharp-handling Focus helps, but it's what Ford has done to turn it into the ST that makes it so special.
First, there's the in-your-face bodykit that is sure to get you noticed. Then there's the turbocharged 2.0-litre engine that's seriously punchy from low revs. The ST also makes a fantastic 'brr-waarrrp' roar as you rev it hard. To top it all off, the superbly judged suspension deals with everything a bumpy UK road has to offer, allowing you to concentrate on enjoying yourself.
When you're not in the mood for fun or are ferrying passengers around, the ST is also impressively comfortable and quiet. Of course, being based on the Focus means five-door practicality and decent cabin and boot space.
The most impressive thing, though, is the price. Even without any discounts, £22k for this much ability makes the ST an absolute steal.
