The Mercedes GLA is a small SUV that’s based on the A-Class family hatchback. Its rivals include the Audi Q3 and the BMW X1 as the more premium options, but bigger and less upmarket alternatives include the Nissan Qashqai, Skoda Yeti and Renault Kadjar.
There are two diesels and three petrol engines to choose from, including a ballistic GLA 45 AMG model. However, we favour the entry-level GLA 200 d, which gets a 2.1-litre diesel that offers low CO2 and tax costs, as well as being the cheapest option for private buyers. It’s not the quietest diesel, nor is it the fastest (even compared to similarly priced rivals), but it fares well in normal driving and you can have it with a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. You can also opt to have it with four-wheel drive, which is compulsory on the high-powered engines in the GLA range.
