The Bentayga is Bentley's first-ever SUV model. It made its global debut at the Frankfurt motor show, and will reach the UK early next year.
What is it?
The Bentley Bentayga is the British marque's first SUV, and the newest entrant into the emerging ultra-luxury SUV market.
Described as "the fastest, most powerful, most luxurious and most exclusive SUV in the world," the Bentayga will sit above the current Mulsanne in Bentley's line-up in terms of size, but the Mulsanne will still be considered the flagship of the range.
Although it's being pitched as a luxury vehicle, Bentley wants to emphasise the car's practical elements. Prototype versions of the Bentayga were taken to five continents in the most difficult conditions to test the SUV's performance under pressure.
The Bentayga was first hinted at in 2012 with the unveiling of Bentley's EXP-9F concept car, but the car's final design has changed significantly since then. The SUV measures 5.14 metres long, with a wheelbase of nearly three metres.
The standard car sits on 20in wheels, but wheels of up to 22 inches are also available. The Bentayga weighs 2422kg.
The Bentayga sits on the same underpinnings as Audi's Q7 and the upcoming new Porsche Cayenne.
What engines can I choose from?
At launch, the Bentayga will only come with one engine option - a twin-turbocharged W12 petrol engine with 600bhp and 663lb ft of torque. It sends power to all four wheels through an automatic transmission.
Equipped with this engine, Bentley says the Bentayga can reach a top speed of 187mph, and can accelerate to 60mph in four seconds. CO2 emissions are rated at 292g/km, with a combined fuel consumption figure of 22.1mpg.
In the future, Bentley is planning to introduce both diesel and plug-in hybrid powertrains for the Bentayga.
How much equipment does it come with?
As is expected from a Bentley, the cabin is adorned with high-quality materials and features a large central infotainment screen, a part-digital instrument cluster and separate infotainment screens for rear passengers.
Customers can order the Bentayga with either two or three rear seats, with a seven-seat version already being planned.
The Bentayga features a computer-controlled suspension system, which allows drivers to choose from a total of eight different driving modes - with four geared towards off-road driving. A trailer assist function also features.
How much will it cost?
Official pricing for the Bentayga starts at £160,200.
How good are its rivals?
Although it's priced well above existing Range Rovers, that car will be used as the main benchmark for the Bentayga to beat initially. The current Range Rover gets a four-star rating on What Car?
