Bentley's W12 engine is incredbly smooth and potent. However, in the real-world its performance advantage over this twin-turbocharged V8 is so small as to be negligible.
The V8 is also easier on fuel, which means less time spent filling up. And because cost is of importance even to prospective Bentley owners, there’s the small matter of it being £30,000 less than the W12 model.
True, you can champion the V8 diesel over this V8 petrol for exactly the same reasons: it’s cheaper to buy, cheaper to run, and still awesomely quick by any reasonable barometer. But then with your sensible hat on, you'd choose the Audi SQ7, because it has the same engine, most of the same qualities and a better infotainment system, yet it's much cheaper again.
The reason for spending the extra on the Bentayga is because you want an incredibly capable luxury SUV that feels genuinely special and is the last word in refinement, and that's what the petrol V8 delivers.
