Car of the Year Awards 2026: Best family car for value
There are several types of family car, but here we’re looking at traditional hatchbacks: large enough to be practical, yet compact enough to be easy and enjoyable to drive...
Skoda Scala 1.0 TSI 95 SE Edition

The surge in the number of goods bought in Black Friday, Cyber Monday and Boxing Day sales suggests that many of us can’t resist a bargain. Cars aren’t usually included in those events, but if they were, the Skoda Scala would be at the top of many buyers’ shopping lists. That’s because you get far more than you might expect for your money.
Even at list price, our chosen version is significantly cheaper than most other family hatchbacks, including Skoda’s own Octavia and the Honda Civic. But when you factor in the discounts available, it can undercut several models in the small car class as well, despite the fact that it’s far more practical. The Scala is so practical, in fact, that it eclipses family cars rivals such as the Toyota Corolla for rear seat and boot space.

Even the least powerful (94bhp) 1.0-litre petrol engine is lively enough for everyday use, while returning respectable fuel economy. Meanwhile, entry-level SE Edition trim comes well equipped, so there’s really no need to pay more by looking elsewhere.
True, the Scala isn’t as efficient, comfortable or classy inside as the Civic, but it is a lot of car for a modest outlay.
