Deal of the Day: Lease a Renault 5 from £197 per month

You could get your hands on our reigning Car of the Year for less than £200 per month thanks to our leasing deals...

Renault 5 front left driving

It’s no secret that we’re huge fans of the Renault 5 – indeed, it’s our reigning What Car? Car of the Year — with its standout credentials including grown-up driving manners, great infotainment system and keen pricing.

Those prices become even more tempting when you take into account how much you can save with our deals. Indeed, you could put a new Renault 5 on your driveway from just £197 per month.

To do that, you’ll need to opt for a 36-month contract with an annual mileage limit of 5000 miles, and an initial payment of £2356.80. The annual 5000 mile restriction isn’t a huge allowance, so you’ll have to be careful to avoid excess mileage charges.

If you regularly cover more miles, you could opt for a more common 36-month, 10,000-mile agreement with six months initial rental (£1509.78), which will cost £251.63 per month.

The R5 comes with a choice of two batteries, but if you drive a lot around the city, our Deal of the Day will be well suited to you, since it’s equipped with the 40kWh Urban Range battery. With an official 193 miles of range, it’s more efficient than the entry-level Mini Cooper Electric. However, if you need to travel farther, it’s worth looking at rivals like the Hyundai Inster or MG4.

Thanks to its urban and suburban design, the R5 feels right at home around town, with its tight turning circle and light, accurate steering. While it comes with relatively large 18in wheels, the ride isn’t uncomfortable, though the Cooper Electric feels slightly more controlled on bumpy roads.

Renault 5 dashboard

Inside, the R5 gets a modern design, with a 7in central infotainment touchscreen and a digital driver’s display behind the wheel. Given its keen price, it’s no surprise that there are some scratchy plastics on the dashboard, but they’re durable enough to feel more upmarket than the materials in a Citroën ë-C3 or Inster.

Included with the infotainment system is Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, which is handy because our Deal of the Day unfortunately doesn’t benefit from the Google-based sat-nav app fitted to posher trim levels.

In terms of space, there are bigger small cars out there, though taller adults sitting in the front shouldn’t have many issues getting comfortable. Space in the back, though, is less impressive, so it’s worth considering how much room you need. That being said, the R5 does have rear doors, making it more accessible than some rivals.

We managed to fit four carry-on suitcases in the R5’s boot – more than the Cooper Electric but less than the ë-C3 – and there’s a handy storage space under the boot floor for charging cables.

Our Deal of the Day comes in entry-level Evolution trim, which gets automatic air conditioning, cruise control, keyless entry and a heat pump for more efficient warming of the interior in cooler weather.
