The Retail Motor Industry Federation, which represents car dealers, says the service and repair industry might have cut back by reducing hours, rather than laying off experienced mechanics, but it says the incentive has protected 20,000 workers in the UK.
Ford has also said that the scrappage incentive has helped to protect around 100,000 people directly and indirectly employed through its activities in the UK.
Overall, there are an estimated 841,000 people designing, building, selling and then servicing and repairing cars in the UK, so the scrappage incentive has helped to protect more than one in 10 of these jobs.
