Many of us are familiar with that need for speed, and it seems that car manufacturers feel the same way. That’s why, despite its large size, the new Kia EV9 GT will aim to deliver those thrills while still maintaining impressive practicality.

The new EV9 GT will be offered with four-wheel drive and powered by two motors, one at the front and one at the rear. The front motor will produce 215bhp, with the rear motor pumping out 362bhp, for a combined output of 501bhp – 123bhp more than the current range-topping EV9 GT-Line.

Shooting from 0-62mph in just 4.6sec, the EV9 GT is speedier than most other seven-seat rivals, including the Volvo EX90, although the petrol-powered Audi SQ7 will reach 62mph in 0.5 seconds faster.

The EV9 GT will also get the same simulated automatic gearbox as in the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N electric hot hatch which is designed to make it feel as though the car is shifting gears as it accelerates. We think it’s pretty impressive in the Ioniq 5 N, and it makes for a more immersive driving experience.

Equipped with the same 99.8kWh battery as in some versions of the regular EV9, the GT variant should be good for an official range of 280 miles. That's slightly less than what the AWD version of the Peugeot e-5008 offers, and the EX90 is even more impressive, with a range of 374 models on every model.

Kia has confirmed the EV9 GT will use 800-volt charging architecture, which enables speeds upwards of 350kW, so with a fast enough charger, a 10-80% charge could take less than 25 minutes. That being said, it can be difficult to find a public charger that will facilitate those speeds.

The EV9 GT is also capable of vehicle-to-load (V2L) charging, which allows you to power external devices using the car's battery.

For the first time on a Kia SUV, adaptive dampers are included which allows the driver to firm or soften the suspension depending on whether they want a more comfortable or sporty drive. These can be toggled using a button on the steering wheel.

On the outside, the EV9 GT gets 21in alloy wheels as standard, as well as a digitally-lit front 'grille' and lime green brake callipers. LED daytime running lights and rear lights with automatic headlight control come as standard. You also get privacy glass, automatic flush door handles and front and rear sunroofs.

Those lime green accents continue onto the inside and echo those seen on the EV6 GT. There's also a heated three-spoke steering wheel exclusive to Kia GT models. The front sport seats are power-adjustable and furnished with faux-suede Alcantara trim.

If you'd prefer a bit more free space, you can opt for a six-seat layout instead of seven seats, with a sliding centre console that can move to the rear seats.

In terms of infotainment, the EV9 GT gets much the same treatment as the regular car, with a 12.3in driver display, 12.3in infotainment touchscreen and a 5.3in climate control touchscreen, but you also get a head-up display as standard. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come as standard, as well as wireless phone charging.

Safety kit includes front, side and rear parking sensors, a 360-degree camera, adaptive cruise control and blind spot monitoring, among others.

The EV9 GT is expected to arrive in the UK in autumn. Prices will start at £82,185 for the seven-seat model, which is around the same as what you'd pay for a Volvo EX90. Six-seat models start at £83,185. A combustion-engined Audi SQ7 will set you back a lot more.
