Roadworks suspended for bank holiday

Roadworks across the UK have been suspended or completed to ease bank holiday traffic jams.

With recession-hit holidaymakers staying at home, roads are expected to be busier than ever over the bank holiday weekend.

In an attempt to cut jams and improve traffic flow, the Highways Agency has suspended or completed half of its roadworks on motorways and major A roads.

Check before you leave
Derek Turner, director of network operations at the Highways Agency, said: 'At this time of year a lot of people will be taking journeys they're not familiar with, so our advice is to plan your journey and make sure you check the route before you leave.

'We expect roads to the main holiday centres, ports and airports will be busy, so we're doing everything we can to help drivers. We've removed as many roadworks as possible and provided a number of information services to help drivers plan their journeys.'
