2 August 2025 – Charging on
Since my last update, I’ve covered more than 1000 miles in my Skoda Elroq electric SUV – the equivalent of driving from London to Madrid. While I can’t say I’ve completed this specific journey (as much as I would like to), my four-figure total has been largely made up of driving long-distance journeys around the UK, as well as shorter daily trips.
This has been a good test, not just for the car, but also – rather selfishly – for me. You see, as I mentioned in my previous report, I’ve never owned an electric car before, so I’ve been intrigued to see how the Elroq fits into my lifestyle.
So far, I can happily say it has slotted in rather nicely. While I don’t have a driveway for home charging, I do have three lamp post chargers on my street in London. This has been super useful, because it has enabled me to plug the car in as soon as I get home from work, so by the next day I have a full charge for wherever I need to go.

There are a couple of downsides to this, though. The first is that on a couple of occasions I’ve found all three chargers occupied when I’ve needed a top-up, so I’ve had to look farther afield to find another.
And the second downside is cost. I’ve been paying 59p/kWh when charging during the day and 31p/kWh when charging overnight (from 12am to 7am). That’s not too bad, but when I compare it to the 7p/kWh rate my colleagues pay overnight with their home chargers, I can’t help but think I’m missing out by not having access to one of these cheap EV tariffs.
These issues aren’t the fault of the Elroq, though, which has been a joy to live with. On my longest journey so far – a 300-mile round trip to Wales – it proved exceptionally comfortable, with its smooth ride, supportive seats and punchy Canton sound system (part of the optional Advance Package) making the drive an absolute pleasure.
I'm also really pleased I decided to go for the larger, 77kWh battery option. While I haven’t reached the 360-mile official figure yet, my real-world range of 293 miles is still pretty good. It allowed me to complete the trip to Wales and back easily, with destination charging at both sides only making the whole experience even more effortless.
