Suzuki Swift Sport vs Volkswagen Up GTI

Our verdict

This test was always going to be a struggle for the Swift, mainly due to its ambitious pricing. It may have the edge over the Up in some areas – notably performance, practicality and standard equipment – but none of that makes up for the fact that it’s significantly more expensive to buy and run than the Up. That the Up is more rewarding to drive and has a classier interior is the final nail in the Swift’s coffin.

Even though it’s not all that rapid compared with the Swift, the Up is a thrilling little thing to barrel around in. Because of its space limitations, it will really only appeal to singletons or empty nesters, but no other car delivers as much fun for so little money as the Up GTI.
