7. Porsche Cayenne 2010-2017
Keen used car buyers are always looking out for a bargain, and probably one of the biggest ones you can find today is the Porsche Cayenne: an example that once cost over £50,000 can now be had for less than the price of a new Ford Mondeo. Go for the 3.0-litre diesel for the best blend of performance and economy, and you’ll have a great used luxury SUV with an outstanding interior and brilliant handling.

Many new car buyers in the UK lamented the day the Yeti went off sale and was never directly replaced, but this shouldn’t bother those in the second-hand market; they won’t be stuck for choice. Reliability is strong, while versatility is impressive thanks to sliding rear seats and a boot that’s a highly practical, square shape.

Our pick: 2.0 TDI SE
5. BMW 3 Series 2012-2019

The BMW 3 Series has always been one of the most popular executive cars around, its virtues including a premium-feeling interior and, of course, the upmarket BMW brand image. Mid-range SE has a decent amount of standard equipment available on it to make it our pick, but we’d suggest you go for a post-2015 facelifted version because it comes with a new 2.0-litre diesel engine that isn’t prone to the timing chain issues of the earlier one.

Our pick: 320d SE (post-2015)
