Volkswagen T-Cross vs Volkswagen T-Roc: costs
Volkswagen has not one but two contenders in the small SUV market, and we rate both highly. Let’s see how they stack up next to each other...
Buying and owning
Costs, equipment, reliability, safety and security
The T-Roc is the pricier of the two to buy outright, although the gap closes a little once you’ve factored in our Target Price discounts; you’ll need an additional £2905 to put the T-Roc on your driveway. Still, it holds onto its value slightly better than the T-Cross and is a little cheaper to service.
The T-Cross fights back with more wallet-friendly insurance premiums and better fuel economy. While the T-Roc chalked up a respectable 42.5mpg in our True MPG tests, the T-Cross returned 46.6mpg, saving you £126 every 12,000 miles. Factor in all the costs a private buyer is likely to face and the T-Roc will cost you an additional £755 over three years.
More relevant to many will be the monthly PCP finance cost. On a 36-month deal with a £2000 deposit and a limit of 10,000 miles per year, the T-Roc costs just £18 per month more than the T-Cross, thanks in part to a more generous deposit contribution at the time of writing. That looks like good value, especially when you consider that the T-Roc is better equipped as standard, coming with niceties such as climate control and ambient LED interior lighting.
The T-Cross and T-Roc both come with automatic emergency braking and lane-keeping assistance, helping them to score five-star ratings in Euro NCAP safety tests. But while there’s little to separate the cars when it comes to front adult occupant protection, children in the rear are less likely to be injured in the T-Roc.
Although the T-Cross was too new to be included in the 2019 What Car? Reliability Survey, only the Jeep Renegade was less reliable than the T-Roc in the small SUV category. Volkswagen came a mid-table 16th out of 31 brands.
