Used Mazda CX-30 2020-present reliability review

The Mazda CX-30 is plush inside and reasonably efficient, but it's not as spacious as some of its rivals.

What should I look for in a used Mazda CX-30?

The Mazda CX-30 may look rugged and off-roader-like, but its size means it’s sure to have tackled tight city streets and car parks many times. With this in mind, check the bodywork for scuffs and dents, as well the wheels for any kerb damage. You’ll also want to make sure the folding rear seats are in good condition, in addition to the interior in general.

In Euro NCAP safety tests, the Mazda CX-30 was found to provide outstanding protection to the driver and front-seat passenger, and achieved an excellent 99% score for adult occupant protection. That helped it towards receiving five stars – the organisation's top rating.

Is a used Mazda CX-30 reliable?

Our data shows the Mazda CX-30 is a generally reliable car. In our 2024 What Car? Reliability Survey, it ranked 16th out of 24 cars in the small SUV category. Its reliability score of 93.4% makes it more reliable than the Cupra Formentor, but less reliable than the BMW X1 and BMW X2.

The largest complaint regarded battery issues, with 9.4% of owners experiencing problems. Other owners (9.2%) in our survey also told us they'd experienced other electrical issues.

As a car brand, Mazda came 16th out of the 31 featured manufacturers with a good overall score of 91.1% – a result that places it above Skoda, Seat and VW. Meanwhile, Kia and Volvo both finished higher up the order.

Every Mazda sold in the UK comes with a three-year, 60,000-mile warranty. That's a match for the warranty offered by Audi, Seat, Skoda and Volkswagen, but Hyundai, Kia and Toyota all offer five years or more.

Used Mazda CX-30 reliability: the owners' view

As part of our annual Reliability Survey, What Car? readers largely praised the Mazda CX-30’s dependability, with many reporting trouble-free ownership.

However, a few issues did emerge, particularly with the infotainment system, where some owners experienced freezing screens and intermittent connection problems. A handful of readers also mentioned warning lights appearing unexpectedly, though in most cases these issues were resolved quickly by dealers.

Mazda’s dealer network received generally positive feedback, with many owners highlighting efficient service and helpful staff. However, a few reported slow turnaround times for repairs, particularly when parts needed to be ordered. One owner expressed frustration over a recurring issue that required multiple visits before a fix was found.

Overall, the CX-30 appears to be a reliable choice, with only minor faults reported. While most dealers provided good service, some owners experienced delays in getting their issues fully resolved.
