While the mild-hybrid tech helps economy and emissions, this is still a big, heavy, petrol-powered luxury SUV. In our custody, the best we saw on the trip computer during regular driving was an average of just over 24mpg. But although we wouldn’t recommend the P400 for its fuel-efficiency, we can certainly see the appeal of this smooth, powerful engine.

That still leaves the diesel-fuelled SDV6 as our pick of the range, though. It’s not as fast outright, but it feels more flexible when you’re pottering around and is noticeably more economical in the real world.
