Last year's overall winner is back to defend its class title, and it's still brilliant. The 520d offers just about everything you might want from a tow car.

Go for the xDrive version we've tested, and your 5 Series comes with four-wheel drive. Pulling a caravan or horsebox over wet grass is much easier in a car that sends power to all four wheels, and it helps with hill starts in the wet, too.

Caravanners don't tend to travel light, so the Touring's 570-litre boot will be welcome. Plus, the classy interior has lots of room for the driver and passengers.

As a tow car, the 520d's outstanding feature is stability. In the lane-change test and at high speeds it maintains firm control over the caravan.

The 2.0-litre diesel is strong enough to tow any sensibly matched trailer at a determined pace, but still promises acceptable fuel economy.

Leave the caravan or trailer behind and the 5 Series is rewarding to drive, although the ride is rather firm if you stick with the standard M Sport suspension. It's worth specifying the optional adaptive damping for a more supple approach to lumps and bumps.

Tow Car Awards verdict: Superb to drive, whether you are towing or not

Land Rover Discovery 3.0 TD6 HSE

Land Rover Discovery with caravan

List price: £65,560 Target Price: £62,216 Kerb weight: 2311kg 85% match: 1964kg Max towing weight: 3500kg Towball limit: 195kg

The Land Rover Discovery makes a habit of winning our heaviest weight class, but it faced serious competition in 2019. The new BMW X5, the Mercedes GLE, and the Volkswagen Touareg all proved very strong tow cars.

But, if you want to tow a big caravan or trailer over long distances, and end your journey feeling relaxed, the Discovery is still the best car for the job.

The 3.0-litre SDV6 diesel engine has tremendous pulling power, and makes short work of towing a heavy twin-axle caravan up to speed. It's a refined engine, too, with very little noise making its way into the car, even under acceleration.

In the lane-change test, the likes of the X5 and Touareg do change direction more keenly. But at high speeds the Discovery is supremely stable.

Inside, the Discovery offers space for seven. Rivals broadly match it for space in the first and second rows, but space in the back is noticeably better in the Disco.

It's not just the Discovery's space that makes it comfortable for the driver and passengers. The ride is very supple at high speeds, although the suspension can be caught out by sharp bumps around town.

Tow Car Awards verdict: Still our favourite heavyweight tow car
