Hurrah! Summer is finally here, and if the weather forecast is anything to go by, it’s set to hang around for a while, too. So if you haven’t already bagged yourself a convertible bargain, now’s the time to do so – before the British summer does its thing and vanishes without a trace!

Fortunately, you don’t have to go out on a limb to own a convertible. There are plenty around that make practical, sensible ownership propositions. These drop-tops are easy to drive, shouldn’t cost the earth to own, and in many cases, they even offer four seats so that you can take the family along for a few wind-in-the-hair days out.

And the best part is that all are available for less than £10,000 – putting them within easy reach of most family car buyers. So what are you waiting for? Read on to find out which is the best used convertible you can buy for £10,000, and get ready for a summer of al-fresco motoring!

10. Mercedes-Benz SL-Class

Best used convertibles for less than £10,000 (and the ones to avoid)

It’s long been one of the swankiest convertibles around, but even a Mercedes-Benz SL can now be had for less than £10,000. Buy the latest model you can afford, in order to avoid the Mercedes quality dip that affected cars of the early 2000s. An SL 350 will be plenty enough for most, though larger-engined models – and the brutally quick AMG version – offer a little more for those needing the ultimate combination of glamour and pace for the cash.

We found: 2006 SL350, 50,000 miles, £9950

9. Audi A3 Cabriolet

Best used convertibles for less than £10,000 (and the ones to avoid)

Slick and stylish, it’s easy to see the appeal of the Audi A3 Cabriolet. Inside, it gets a top-quality interior and space for four people, too, which only adds to the appeal. True, it isn’t the best convertible around to drive, with a ride that’s too firm to be comfortable and steering too light to make it fun, and the A3’s also a touch on the pricey side. But if you’re after a practical cabriolet with a premium feel, the A3 fits the bill.

We found: 2011 1.2 TFSI Sport, 20,000 miles, £10,000

8. BMW 6 Series Convertible

Best used convertibles for less than £10,000 (and the ones to avoid)

A classic grand tourer in every way, the BMW 6 Series Convertible matches suave looks with a smooth ride, a generous amount of equipment and power to spare. That it’s now available for such low prices makes it seriously tempting, even if fuel, maintenance and repair costs are a little on the high side. True, the interior isn’t quite as special as some other big convertibles. But it feels classy enough and well built, and at this price – given the way this big BMW drives – we reckon you’ll be enjoying yourself too much to care.

We found: 2006 630i Sport, 63,000 miles, £9950
