Best used coupé cars

Toyota GT86

10. Toyota GT86

The Toyota GT86 is the coupé for the keen driver, with sharp responses, a superb chassis and fabulous feedback. It’s also remarkably comfortable to drive long distances, thanks to brilliant seats.

We found: 2014 2.0 D-4S, 26,011 miles, £15,211

Best used coupé cars

Toyota GT86

You do have to live with some compromises – a slightly gutless engine and cheap-feeling interior, for example – but if you simply want a coupé that’s a joy to drive on a fast, twisty road, this is it. Throw in the five-year (from new) warranty and Toyota’s enviable reputation for reliability and there’s plenty to love.

Best used coupé cars

Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupé

9. Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupé

Comfortable and classy, the previous-generation Mercedes C-Class Coupé makes a lot of sense if you need a smart two-door with enough space for the kids. It isn’t quite as sharp to drive as some rivals, but the pay-off is a smoother ride; stick to SE versions if that’s a key requirement, because sportier models can be a bit firm. Diesel models are quite noisy, although the trade-off is that they are at least efficient.

Best used coupé cars

Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupé

Check that the electric folding door mirrors (if it has them) work as they should, because they can fall out of sync. There have been a few recalls on this generation of C-Class Coupé, so speak with a Mercedes main dealer to find out if your potential purchase has had all the remedial work carried out.

BMW 6 Series Coupé

8. BMW 6 Series

The BMW 6 Series lacks the status of some of the larger coupés, but as a result, it’s great value as a used buy. What’s more, it’s comfortable, quick, cosseting and extremely handsome – and with a choice of diesel or petrol engines, it can be respectably efficient.

We found: 2014 640d SE, 21,000 miles, £20,970

Best used coupé cars

BMW 6 Series Coupé

The 6 Series is a very complicated car and has a bewildering array of gadgets, so check for any warning lights on the dashboard and that the air conditioning works correctly. The interior is well put together, but it is a touch on the ordinary side.

Mini Coupé

7. Mini Coupé

Its bizarre styling might not be to everyone’s taste, but if you want a fashionable coupé that won’t cost the earth, this is where to look. What’s more, the Mini Coupé is genuinely good fun to drive, with a choice of responsive engines, a lively chassis and (in petrol versions at least) a great engine note.

We found: 2013 Cooper, 16,500 miles, £8391

Best used coupé cars

Mini Coupé

You’ll have to live with just the two seats, mind you, although there’s a useful storage cubby behind them, as well as a decent-sized boot. Timing chains have been known to stretch on the 1.6-litre petrol engine, and repairs can be expensive. Water could also leak through the passenger window seal, so check the condition of the rubbers by taking the car to a car wash on your test drive to expose any weak spots.

Best used coupé cars

Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupé

6. Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupé

As with the smaller C-Class Coupé, comfort is the watchword for the Mercedes E-Class Coupé. It’s softly sprung, which means it isn’t quite as much fun to drive as some of its ilk, but the flipside is an emphasis on smoothness. As ever with used Mercs of this era, the diesel engines are a bit raucous, but otherwise, few other coupés are quite this relaxing to waft along in.

We found: 2014 E220 CDI SE, 21,186 miles, £15,994

Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupé

Make sure the parking sensors work, otherwise you could be in for a nasty surprise when you come to park the E-Class Coupé. Early sat-nav systems wouldn’t take a full seven-digit postcode, but there is an update that can fix this. However, it won’t be free, so make sure you factor that into the price you pay.

BMW 2 Series Coupé

5. BMW 2 Series

Smart, compact and sharp to drive, the BMW 2 Series is a fantastic little coupé that ticks a host of boxes. True, it’s quite expensive to buy, and space in the back isn’t the greatest – the penalty you pay for its easy-to-drive dimensions. But you do get the choice of a line-up of punchy yet economical engines, as well as a fantastic chassis that combines sharp responses with a comfortable ride.

We found: 2014 220d SE, 18,926 miles, £14,533

Best used coupé cars

BMW 2 Series Coupé

It’s classy inside and benefits from one of the best infotainment and sat-nav systems around. If you’re buying a diesel 2 Series, make sure that the previous owner has taken the car on regular motorway journeys, otherwise you could encounter problems with the diesel particulate filter (DPF).

Volkswagen Scirocco

4. Volkswagen Scirocco

Handsome, practical and good fun to drive: the Volkswagen Scirocco has it all. While it isn’t quite as classy inside as some of the other coupés here, its price reflects that and makes the Scirocco look like very good value. There’s a choice of diesel or petrol engines, and automatic or manual gearboxes, and because the Scirocco was so popular when it was new, there’s a wide range to choose from on the used market.

We found: 2014 2.0 TDI, 24,747 miles, £12,470

Best used coupé cars

Volkswagen Scirocco

The hatchback rear end and fold-down seats help to make the Scirocco quite practical. There’s one less seat in the Scirocco than the Golf on which it is based and the roof lining eats away at head room, but that’s the compromise you have to make. If you are going for a DSG automatic version, make sure that it shifts between gears correctly, because repairs can be expensive. Hesitation at roundabouts is a common complaint.

BMW 4 Series Coupé

3. BMW 4 Series

It’s based on the ever-popular 3 Series, so it’s no wonder the BMW 4 Series is such a great coupé. You get the same classy interior, excellent road manners and cracking petrol and diesel engines, but it has two fewer doors and a swooping, elegant roofline that’s subtle yet sophisticated and pleases the more you look at it. All of which makes the 4 Series something of a winner.

We found: 2014 420d Modern, 21,398 miles, £14,888

Best used coupé cars

BMW 4 Series Coupé

The 4 Series is quite a big car and you can seat four in it with reasonable comfort, but taller passengers will find their heads touching the roof. Also, there have been a few recalls on the 4 Series, so make sure you check with your local BMW dealer to make sure there are no outstanding safety concerns on your vehicle.

Audi TT

2. Audi TT

Some sports car may now be more thrilling to drive, but none of them can match the TT’s special combination of qualities. It’s quick, supremely agile and very easy to live with, and it’s packed with the latest tech, making it a truly tempting ownership proposition.

We found: 2015 2.0T FSI Sport, 19,908 miles, £19,200

Best used coupé cars

Audi TT

This generation of Audi TT has shown few problems as of yet, but make sure that the car comes with a full service history and that the DSG automatic gearbox (if fitted) shifts between the gears as it should. Then you’ll know you’ve found a great little coupé that should give years of trouble-free motoring.

Best used coupé cars

Audi TT

1. Audi TT

No, we haven’t duplicated second place; the previous-generation Audi TT is a perennial favourite of ours, and it’s not hard to see why. The Audi TT matches great looks to a fabulous chassis, then garnishes it with a beautifully made interior and a wide range of engines. You can even have it with a diesel if you want to save some money on fuel.

We found: 2013 1.8 TFSI S Line, 25,000 miles, £13,900

Best used coupé cars

Audi TT

Okay, so the rear seats are best reserved for kids, but they are there if you need them, and there’s a big boot. Things to look out for include side bolsters on leather seats that can start to show signs of wear and there can be a few dashboard creaks, but on the whole, the TT is an excellent used proposition. What’s more, prices are actually pretty reasonable, considering the quality of the car you’re getting.

Peugeot RCZ

And the used coupés to avoid…

Peugeot RCZ

It looks great, but the Peugeot RCZ’s ride is incredibly firm – and it can’t match the best for handling or quality unless you go for the R version.

Hyundai Veloster

Hyundai Veloster

Unusual looks mask a coupé that isn’t terrible, but neither is it really any better than average in most areas. Others do it better than the Hyundai Veloster.
