1. BMW 5 Series
The BMW 5 Series is frequently our favourite luxury car – the latest model won our Car of the Year award this year, for example. No wonder – even for £5000, the examples you can buy are great to drive, comfortable to ride in – assuming you avoid the too-firm M Sport versions – and beautifully laid out inside. The 5 Series is efficient, too, with low fuel consumption and cheap tax, and it's spacious enough for four adults to sit in comfort. In other words, there’s plenty to love and very little to dislike.
We found: 2006 525d SE, 82,000 miles, full service history, £4995
And the luxury cars to avoid…
The Honda Legend isn’t a bad car – it’s reliable and well equipped – but it’s only available with a vast, thirsty petrol engine, and it’s also extremely bland-looking.
The Chrysler 300C is based on the lowest-quality Mercedes E-Class of the lot, and has a poor reputation for quality and reliability. It’s thirsty, too.
