New Mercedes-AMG GT 4dr vs Porsche Panamera

Our verdict

Do these two combine cutting-edge looks, performance, practicality and luxury? To a degree, they do, but like a Concorde passenger, you’d better be prepared to compromise. Neither car can match the handling of a sports car, nor the space and luxury of a limousine.

They are rapid, though, and if it were purely about being more fun to drive, the GT would win. But when you bring infotainment, comfort and refinement into the equation, its shortcomings are more evident. An E63 S will do more for much less.

So the Panamera takes a narrow win. Although it isn’t as entertaining, it’s the more comfortable and relaxing car in which to cover miles swiftly, and that’s fundamentally what grand tourers are about. But while its hybrid system delivers remarkably cheap company car tax, it degrades aspects of the driving experience so heavily that, again, we’d recommend buying a cheaper, non-hybrid Panamera instead.
