Public wants more 20mph zones

The majority of people want more 20mph speed limits, but enforcement options such as cameras and speed bumps get a big thumbs-down, according to new research.
A poll by the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) revealed that 67% of people want 20mph zones outside schools, while 38% called for their use on roads with amenities such as shops and parks on them.
However, just 25% of those polled wanted 20mph to become the default limit in all built-up areas.
Enforcement
Despite wanting wider use of the lower limit, there was a resounding rejection of physical enforcement methods such as speed humps and cameras with just 21% voting in favour of their use. Those polled preferred the use of signs and driver compliance to enforce 20mph limits.
The IAM's head of road safety, Kevin Delaney, said: 'The IAM supports the selective use of 20mph speed limits where there is clear evidence that the risk of casualties will be reduced. However, the blanket use of them risks widespread disregard by drivers.
'Passive enforcement measures, such as speed bumps, are unpopular and active enforcement by police is unrealistic in the current financial climate. If lower speed limits are restricted to locations and times where there is an obvious need, responsible drivers, who are the overwhelming majority, will adhere to them without the need for enforcement.'
