WINNER: Best Medium Van
Ford Transit Custom
Priced from £18,190 MPG 32.1-91.7mpg CO2 emissions 70-176g/km Load space 5.7-8.3m3 Payload 686-1460kg Power 103-183bhp Torque 228-306lb ft
The Ford Transit Custom is an exceptional van to drive, but to be the overall winner of the Best Medium Van award requires it to deliver far more than just a pleasant time behind the wheel. It is also a versatile all-rounder.
In terms of practicality, the Transit Custom is only a shade behind the best, offering one of the largest load areas on the market and a healthy payload allowance. While it doesn’t lead the way in terms of its dimensions for load volume, load length or even payload, it is almost always second – and then by only small margins – to the quartet of the Citroën Dispatch, Peugeot Expert, Toyota Proace and Vauxhall Vivaro.
Likewise, while it can’t live with the Volkswagen Transporter’s superb residual values, its popularity among all trades ensures that you are unlikely to struggle to find a buyer when you come to resell it. It is also equipped with a range of economical engines, including a plug-in hybrid variant that will make a compelling case on costs for some owners.
The range is also expansive, with vehicle weights from 2.6 tonnes to 3.4 tonnes that comfortably help it outmuscle heavyweight names like the Mercedes Vito and the Transporter by around 200kg when comparing the best-performing vans from each brand.
Sure, the Transit Custom has come in for some criticism for the quality of its door locks and reliability in the past, but Ford continues to push its best-selling van, and third best-selling model behind the Fiesta and Focus, forward to great effect.
In many ways, the Transit Custom isn’t just the best medium-sized van; it can also stake a claim as the leader across the whole light commercial vehicle sector.
