Space & practicality

How it copes with people and clutter

Volkswagen Touareg 4x4 front space

You won’t be left wanting for space in the front of the Touareg. It’s roomy enough that even tall adults are easily accommodated, and because the front doors open wide and the door openings are tall, access is good. You’ll find plenty of useful storage areas, including two central cupholders and a cubby between the seats whose lid doubles as an armrest. The driver’s door pocket will take a 1.5-litre bottle, while the passenger-side one will accept a 1.0-litre bottle. There’s also a dashboard-mounted stowage bin, just above the central air vents. Finally, the glovebox is cooled, so is ideal for storing drinks and snacks.

Volkswagen Touareg 4x4 rear space

Two tall adults can travel in complete comfort in the back of the Touareg. There’s enough room for three adults to sit abreast, but it’s a bit of a squeeze, so is best reserved for short journeys. It’s a shame that the rear doors don’t open wider, though, because getting in and out can be a bit tricky. Rear passengers get a central armrest with integrated cupholders, a 12V charging point, a small storage tray and adjustable air vents. Both door pockets will hold a 1.0-litre bottle.

Volkswagen Touareg 4x4 seating flexibility

All versions of the Touareg come with rear seats that split 60/40 and fold down, although they don’t lie completely flat. They can be slid forwards and backwards, however, and the angle of the backrests can also be adjusted. Regardless of where the rear seats are positioned, there’s plenty of space in the boot, so it’s something of a shame that VW doesn’t offer a seven-seat version of the Touareg. Alternatives such as the Land Rover Discovery Sport and Volvo XC90 have seven seats as standard, which do prove useful for the odd journey. Manual six-way front-seat adjustment and adjustable lumbar support are standard, and the controls are easy to use. Electric adjustment is available, but only as part of the costly leather upgrade packs. Memory functions are also offered in conjunction with the upgraded leather seats.

Volkswagen Touareg 4x4 boot space

The boot is large and well shaped, and you can get an even bigger load bay if you slide the rear seats forward. Rivals such as the BMW X5 offer more luggage space, but you’re unlikely to feel shortchanged with the Touareg’s capacity. Four load-lashing points make it easy to secure items in the boot, and every model gets a stainless steel load sill protector to protect the edge of the boot from damage. An electric tailgate is standard on top-spec R-line versions and a cost option of other Touaregs.
