While the idea of owning a different car for every occasion sounds appealing, most of us have to settle for just the one, due to pesky realities such as limited budgets and parking. So, what do you buy if you want a reasonably priced car that can do it all?

Well, on paper, the latest Ford Focus Estate seems like a good shout, promising the fun handling, low running costs and roomy interior of its hatchback sister, allied to a much more practical boot.

Indeed, where the previous Focus Estate was well off the pace in this last area, with a 475-litre luggage capacity, its successor hikes that to 608 litres.

But how does the Focus Estate stack up against similarly priced rivals, including the Skoda Octavia Estate, Volkswagen Golf Estate and the one with the biggest boot of the lot, the Kia Ceed Sportswagon?

That’s what we’ll be exploring in this review, plus we’ll point you in the direction of the Focus Estate engines and trims that make the most sense and the options you might want to add.
