2017 Porsche 911 GT2 RS review – verdict

The 911 GT2 RS is the most powerful and technologically advanced 911 to date, but is it the most rewarding to drive?

Porsche 911 GT2 RS

Like all modern-day RS Porsches, the GT2 RS is not technically limited-run, but good luck trying to order one from the factory. In fact, at the time of writing, we have it on good authority that the current UK allocation is sold out.

So does that make this article pointless? Well, not in our book. You see, the GT2 RS is the pinnacle of 911 development and there is a very good chance that it will never be superseded; with 691bhp from just 3.8 litres, it’s hard to see how Porsche can raise the bar yet again without turning to hybrid or – dare we say it – electric power.

Therefore, the GT2 RS is in a way an all-out celebration of the internal combustion engine. Because, despite employing space-age materials, cutting-edge electronics and racing-spec aero, this near-700bhp monolith demonstrates everything we love about old-school turbocharged sports cars. When the wick is lit, it takes everything in your skill-set to get the most out of it. It’s loud, challenging and just the right amount frightening. In short, it's a true sports car.

The Porsche 944 is one of the best bargain classic Porsches out there. Clever weight distribution gives it sublime handling balance, and makes it a deft companion on a back road. What’s more, prices are picking up at the moment, which means buying one now before they climb through the roof is a savvy move.

The original Porsche Boxster was one of its maker’s great success stories – some might even go so far as to say that it saved the company. It was immense fun to drive, and to an extent brought Porsche motoring to the masses.
