New small cars aren't launched too often these days, but the Toyota Aygo X is one of the latest additions to the class. While it might not be the most spacious or practical of contenders, it is cheap to run and well equipped. Our preferred trim is the entry-level Pure model, which comes with all the kit you'll need, including automatic headlights and air conditioning.

For the price, the MG ZS offers a lot of car for the money. It has a relatively classy interior, decent handling and roomy rear seats. Plus, it comes with a seven-year warranty. However, it's worth noting that the 1.5-litre engine isn't particularly economical, and performance is so-so.

The Renault Clio might not be the most fun small car to drive, but it is a great all-rounder, being safe, practical and good value. Even this entry-level Evolution model comes with LED headlights, automatic wipers and keyless start as standard, for example. This 1.0-litre engine should also be more than adequate for daily needs, however our preferred 1.6-litre hybrid brings greater performance and efficiency.

We like the Rio's refined range of petrol engines, and the engine quoted here is the entry-level option. The Rio is also well equipped, and our recommended '2' version comes with 15in alloy wheels, a leather steering wheel and gear knob, electric folding mirrors and an 8.0in touchscreen infotainment system.

Not long ago, the Hyundai i10 played second fiddle to the Kia Picanto. Now, though, the tables have turned, and it's the i10 that's our top choice. That's thanks to its comfortable, quiet driving manners, decent space and generous standard safety kit. This is our recommended version, and it comes with an 8.0in infotainment touchscreen, a rear-view camera and 15in alloy wheels.

It may sit right on the cusp of our £200 per month budget, but the Toyota Yaris is well worth the money. It's incredibly fuel-efficient, having averaged a whisker under 60mpg in our True MPG testing. You also get a lot of kit for the money, with a list of standard features that includes a 7.0in infotainment touchscreen, a rear-view camera and automatic emergency braking.

The Dacia Jogger represents incredible value for money, and you might think an MPV at this price point would bring big compromises. However, it doesn't; the Jogger is genuinely an impressive piece of kit that's good to drive, spacious and practical. Expression is the mid-level trim and comes with front and rear parking sensors, keyless entry and an 8.0in infotainment screen.

The Dacia Sandero Stepway is a good small car with great passenger space and a massive boot, all at a very low price. Our recommended 1.0-litre Bi-Fuel engine – which can be run on petrol or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) – is smooth and punchy enough, and the ability to use LPG can cut running costs significantly.
