10. Toyota Aygo X

Used Toyota Aygo X 2022-present front cornering

Model 1.0 VVT-i Edge | Target PCP £184 per month | Target Price £16,620 | The deal Three and a half years' PCP finance with 3.9% APR. Limit of 8000 miles per year

New small cars aren't launched too often these days, but the Toyota Aygo X is one of the latest additions to the class. While it might not be the most spacious or practical of contenders, it is cheap to run and well equipped. Our preferred trim is the entry-level Pure model, which comes with all the kit you'll need, including automatic headlights and air conditioning.

9. MG ZS

Model 1.5 VTi-TECH Excite | Target PCP £177 per month | Target Price £16,920 | The deal Four years' PCP finance with 5.9% APR and £500 finance deposit contribution. Limit of 8000 miles per year

For the price, the MG ZS offers a lot of car for the money. It has a relatively classy interior, decent handling and roomy rear seats. Plus, it comes with a seven-year warranty. However, it's worth noting that the 1.5-litre engine isn't particularly economical, and performance is so-so.

8. Hyundai i20

Used Hyundai i20 2020-present front cornering

Model 1.0 T-GDi 48V MHD SE Connect | Target PCP £181 per month | Target Price £18,170 | The deal Four years' PCP finance with 5.9% APR and £1000 finance deposit contribution. Limit of 8000 miles per year

If you're after a small car with loads of space, the Hyundai i20 should be on your list; its interior is bigger than those of almost all its rivals. Smooth petrol engines, a long list of standard equipment and a five-year warranty add further to its appeal.

7. Renault Clio

Model 1.0 TCe 90 Evolution | Target PCP £189 per month | Target Price £17,546 | The deal Four years' PCP finance with 5.2% APR and £750 finance deposit contribution. Limit of 8000 miles per year

The Renault Clio might not be the most fun small car to drive, but it is a great all-rounder, being safe, practical and good value. Even this entry-level Evolution model comes with LED headlights, automatic wipers and keyless start as standard, for example. This 1.0-litre engine should also be more than adequate for daily needs, however our preferred 1.6-litre hybrid brings greater performance and efficiency.

6. Kia Rio

Kia Rio 2022 front right tracking

Model 1.2 DPi 2 | Target PCP £199 per month | Target Price £16,249 | The deal Three years' PCP finance with 6.9% APR and £750 finance deposit contribution. Limit of 8000 miles per year

We like the Rio's refined range of petrol engines, and the engine quoted here is the entry-level option. The Rio is also well equipped, and our recommended '2' version comes with 15in alloy wheels, a leather steering wheel and gear knob, electric folding mirrors and an 8.0in touchscreen infotainment system.

Model 1.2 MPi SE Connect | Target PCP £179 per month | Target Price £14,510 | The deal Four years' PCP finance with 5.0% APR. Limit of 8000 miles per year

Not long ago, the Hyundai i10 played second fiddle to the Kia Picanto. Now, though, the tables have turned, and it's the i10 that's our top choice. That's thanks to its comfortable, quiet driving manners, decent space and generous standard safety kit. This is our recommended version, and it comes with an 8.0in infotainment touchscreen, a rear-view camera and 15in alloy wheels.

Model 1.5 Hybrid Icon | Target PCP £194 per month | Target Price £20,022 | The deal Three and a half years' PCP finance with 1.9% APR. Limit of 8000 miles per year

It may sit right on the cusp of our £200 per month budget, but the Toyota Yaris is well worth the money. It's incredibly fuel-efficient, having averaged a whisker under 60mpg in our True MPG testing. You also get a lot of kit for the money, with a list of standard features that includes a 7.0in infotainment touchscreen, a rear-view camera and automatic emergency braking.

Model 1.0 TCe Expression | Target PCP £190 per month | Target Price £17,731 | The deal Four years' PCP finance with 5.9% APR. Limit of 8000 miles per year

The Dacia Jogger represents incredible value for money, and you might think an MPV at this price point would bring big compromises. However, it doesn't; the Jogger is genuinely an impressive piece of kit that's good to drive, spacious and practical. Expression is the mid-level trim and comes with front and rear parking sensors, keyless entry and an 8.0in infotainment screen.

If you're looking for a refined car that does everything well, the Polo could be for you. It rides smoothly, remaining composed over even the nastiest potholes, and is easy to drive. Plus, it's pretty spacious inside. Life models get LED headlights with automatic headlight control, an 8.0in touchscreen infotainment system and adaptive cruise control.

1. Dacia Sandero Stepway

Dacia Sandero Stepway 2022 front right tracking

Model 1.0 TCe Bi-Fuel Expression | Target PCP £187 per month | Target Price £15,448 | The deal Four years' PCP finance with 5.9% APR. Limit of 8000 miles per year

The Dacia Sandero Stepway is a good small car with great passenger space and a massive boot, all at a very low price. Our recommended 1.0-litre Bi-Fuel engine – which can be run on petrol or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) – is smooth and punchy enough, and the ability to use LPG can cut running costs significantly.
