Best used city cars for less than £2000 (and the ones to avoid)
7. Fiat 500
Where would any top 10 list be without a shout out for the stylish one? The Fiat 500 scores highly on desirability, because its retro styling pays faithful homage to the highly prized original 500, all without becoming a horrendous automotive caricature of its former self. Sadly, because of this car's desirability, you will have to go for something slightly older and with more miles on it. Make sure you go for the zesty 1.2 engine and either Pop Star or Lounge trim levels to get niceties such as air-con.
We found: 2008 Fiat 500 1.2 Lounge, 84,000 miles, £1995
6. Renault Twingo
Smart styling means the Renault Twingo looks the part, inside and out – although while the interior looks great, its plastics are a little on the cheap side. Never mind, though; you get plenty of space in the back and a sizeable boot, and the rear seats slide back and forth so that you can choose whether you want more boot space or rear leg room. What’s more, although the Twingo isn’t the sharpest tool in the box, its soft suspension is comfortable, although, if you're interested in power, go for the GT model, because this particular version has a 100bhp turbocharged 1.2-litre engine, making it the fastest car on this list.
We found: 2011 Renault Twingo 1.2 Dynamique, 41,000 miles, £1795
5. Toyota Aygo
Smartly styled and remarkably economical, it’s no wonder the Toyota Aygo was such a huge hit, along with its sister cars, the Citroën C1 and Peugeot 107. Its 1.0-litre engine is zippy around town, its funky dashboard is more interesting than most city cars’, and its handling is responsive. Just keep in mind that the Aygo gets noisy on the motorway and that space in the back and boot is rather cramped.
We found: 2011 Toyota Aygo 1.0 Ice, 70,600 miles, £1990
