Best used Mercedes

Best used Mercedes

Mercedes-Benz is one of the most prestigious car manufacturers in the world, and for good reason. Its reputation for producing long-lasting cars that combine upmarket interiors with desirable technology and durable engineering precedes it, and in recent years it has also developed a name for spacious estates, stylish convertibles and rakish coupés.

Of course, not everyone can afford a new Mercedes, but such is the popularity of its cars – not to mention the wide variety of models on offer – that there’s now something out there for everyone. But which is best for you?

To help you work that out, whatever your budget may be, we’ve come up with our top three Mercedes for £2000, £5000, £10,000 and £25,000. Read on to find out which used models we chose.

Best used Mercedes for £25,000

Mercedes-Benz C-Class

3. C-Class (2014-present)

The latest C-Class is one of the most efficient executive cars around in real-world driving, and it's one of a dwindling number of executive cars that actually offers enough space for four adults to sit comfortably on a long journey.

We found: 2015 C250 Bluetec, 17,000 miles, £24,500

Best used Mercedes for £25,000

Mercedes-Benz C-Class interior

Just make sure you buy right; the C-Class rides poorly if you choose the wrong model, so we'd stick to a car equipped with the Airmatic air suspension or, if you can't find one of those, the AMG Line, which is stiffer but more controlled. Pair that with the C250 diesel engine and you'll have a classy, comfortable executive car that should still feel robust many miles down the line.

Mercedes E-Class Estate

2. E-Class Estate (2010-2016)

Few cars can beat the vastness of the E-Class Estate’s boot, and fewer still can combine such space and practicality with the air of luxury and quality that the Mercedes offers. It’s one of the most comfortable estates around, it’s well equipped, and because it’s based on a luxury car, you get to move those hefty loads around in plush surroundings.

We found: 2015 E350 Bluetec Estate AMG Sport Night Edition, 10,000 miles, £24,500

Best used Mercedes for £25,000

Mercedes E-Class Estate interior

This budget is enough to buy you a late E350 diesel, with the potent and quiet six-cylinder diesel engine, in a high specification that comes with plenty of toys, making the E-Class Estate an even more agreeable way to shift large amounts of stuff around.

Mercedes CLS

1. CLS (2010-present)

The CLS's swooping lines earn it admiring glances from almost all who spot it, and yet it tends to fall in value more quickly than its more conventional saloon stablemates. That makes it a great deal as a used buy. It also has fine handling, punchy engines and, if you can find one with the optional air suspension, a wonderfully smooth ride.

We found: 2015 CLS 350 Bluetec AMG Sport, 26,000 miles, £24,995

Best used Mercedes for £25,000

Mercedes CLS

Go for the CLS 350 CDI for the best combination of power and efficiency. It's now relatively easy to find one for less than £25,000; that's why the CLS is our favourite Merc for the money.

Best used Mercedes for £10,000

Mercedes C-Class

3. C-Class (2007-2014)

The previous-generation C-Class is one of the most upmarket used executive cars you can buy. And while it can’t quite match some of its rivals in terms of outright handling ability, its blend of comfort, efficiency and space makes it truly desirable. It’s also ubiquitous, so it’s easy to find a cracking example, and that ubiquity means used prices aren’t as high as you might think.

We found: 2012 C220 CDI SE Executive, 44,000 miles, £9990

Best used Mercedes for £10,000

Mercedes C-Class

Petrol-powered examples are few and far between but worth considering if you aren't doing many miles, especially because the diesel models, while efficient, can be rather noisy. Post-facelift cars are the best, because they have a slightly classier interior and better equipment.

Mercedes E-Class

2. E-Class (2010-2016)

The previous E-Class saloon can now be had for less than £10,000, which, frankly, makes it look like a bit of a bargain. Not only is it comfortable and well appointed inside, but it’s also pleasant to drive and has loads of room for its occupants.

We found: 2010 E250 CDI Sport, 72,000 miles, £9767

Best used Mercedes for £10,000

Mercedes E-Class

Granted, it isn’t quite as exciting as the rival BMW 5 Series, and nor is its interior quite as classy, but it isn’t far off on either count. And with the V6 diesel engine, it offers smooth, punchy performance and very reasonable fuel economy.

Mercedes S-Class

1. S-Class (2006-2013)

At this price, the S-Class represents extraordinary value for money. In its day, it was one of the best luxury cars in the world, if not the best, with a cosseting ride, vast amounts of high-tech equipment and wonderfully comfortable seats.

We found: 2009 S320 CDI, 86,000 miles, £9357

Best used Mercedes for £10,000

Mercedes S-Class interior

Choose the S320 CDI version and you even get very reasonable fuel consumption, allied to a smooth and flexible diesel engine that proves more than enough power whether you're pottering around town or cruising along a motorway.

Mercedes SLK

3. SLK (2004-2011)

If you’re after a two-seat roadster that’s as practical as it is prestigious, the SLK should be on your radar. Not only does it look swish, but the folding hard-top roof makes it quieter than most convertible rivals on the move, not to mention more secure when it’s parked. Inside, there’s plenty of room for two, and you even get a sizeable boot – as long as you keep the roof up.

We found: 2007 SLK 200 Kompressor, 88,000 miles, £4800

Best used Mercedes for £5,000

Mercedes SLK interior

A diesel engine was available, as was a fire-breathing V8-powered AMG model, but we'd avoid both of these in favour of the simpler, cheaper and more relaxed four and six-cylinder petrol engines. After all, the SLK is more of a boulevard cruiser than an out-and-out sports car, and these engines suit its laid-back nature.

Best used Mercedes for £5,000

Mercedes S-Class

2. S-Class (1999-2006)

The S-Class has always led the way for luxury cars, but this generation gained a reputation for technological advancement like no other. It’s long-lasting, too; there are still plenty of examples around for you to choose from, and that’s pushed values through the floor.

We found: 2002 S500, 55,000 miles, £4995

Best used Mercedes for £5,000

Mercedes S-Class interior

This is one of the more handsome S-Classes of recent years, too, and of course you get the model's typical values of space, comfort and outright luxury. If you can afford the fuel consumption, a car with a petrol engine will be more rewarding to drive, but most go for the diesel option, which is a little more complex and costly to fix if it goes wrong but mitigates that with lower day-to-day running costs.

Best used Mercedes for £5,000

Mercedes CLS

1. CLS (2005-2010)

When the original CLS came out, it rather took the world by surprise. Here was fuddy-duddy Mercedes producing a four-door saloon that was long, low and incredibly elegant. Inside, the CLS was a treat, too, with swathes of wood and leather that made it feel every bit the luxury car it was.

We found: 2006 CLS 320 CDI, 100,000 miles, £4995

Best used Mercedes for £5,000

Mercedes CLS interior

Today, it remains one of the most desirable and unusual cars Mercedes has ever made; some experts think it's bound for classic status one day. Despite this, remarkably, because the CLS depreciated more heavily than the more traditional Mercedes saloons, you can now get a half-decent example for less than £5000.

Mercedes A-Class

3. A-Class (1998-2005)

One of the first mini-MPVs, the clever little A-Class benefited from a high riding position, which enabled it to seat four adults in comfort despite being no longer than a small car. It was flawed, mind you, by a tinny-feeling interior and a slightly firm ride, but you couldn’t fault its space or versatility, and with small petrol and diesel engines, it was cheap to run, too.

We found: 2002 A160 Classic SE, 83,000 miles, £1689

Best used Mercedes for £2,000

Mercedes A-Class

These days, we'd advise sticking with the petrol models, simply for their relative mechanical simplicity; there's less to go wrong, in other words. You can now buy a decent one for less than £2000, which is great value.

Mercedes 190E

2. 190 (1982-1993)

We don’t normally feature cars this old, but the 190 is still worthy of consideration if you’ve got £2000 to spend on a Mercedes. It’s now becoming a classic car and, as such, values are set to rise soon, meaning a 190 could be a good investment.

We found: 1993 190E 2.0 Auto, 83,000 miles, £1995

Best used Mercedes for £2,000

Mercedes 190 interior

What’s more, the 190 one of the most comfortable cars you’ll find for the price, and with its old-school Mercedes build quality, it should provide years of reliable daily service. Diesel models are rare, but they're also slow and noisy by modern standards, so we reckon a fuel-injected 190E 1.8 or 2.0-litre petrol is the best bet, ideally paired with an automatic gearbox.

Best used Mercedes for £2,000

Mercedes SLK

1. SLK (1996-2004)

You’ll struggle to find a better-looking convertible for £2000 than the SLK. You’ll also struggle to find one that feels quite so secure and quiet with the roof up, because it comes with a folding hard-top, which is a rarity at this price.

We found: 2002 SLK 230 Kompressor, 100,000 miles, £1950

Best used Mercedes for £2,000

Mercedes SLK interior

Sadly, it doesn’t drive or handle like the best sports cars, and all come with a relatively sluggish automatic gearbox, but if you’re only after a smart two-seat cruiser with the potential to rise in value, the SLK fits the bill.
