Car of the Year Awards 2021: Best pick-up for value

Today, buyers expect a vehicle that you enjoy driving and being seen in, rather than simply something that does the job. But, of course, pick-ups are still workhorses first and foremost...

Few vehicles have become as synonymous with their category as the Mitsubishi L200. It is to pick-ups what the Volkswagen Golf is to hatchbacks, and it fully deserves this status.

Brilliantly utilitarian, it has a switchable four- wheel drive system and low-range gearbox for smug unstoppability, as well as a durable interior, a 1045kg payload and a maximum towing capacity of 3500kg. You even get a five-year, 62,500-mile warranty, and the 2.3-litre diesel engine is one of the more efficient in this class.

On top of all that, the L200 is great value. Our pick of the range, the 4Life, has air conditioning, cruise control, Bluetooth, USB charging and 16in alloy wheels, yet it’s one of the most affordable pick-ups around, with great deals to please those who might be leasing rather than paying company car tax.

Although the Ssangyong Musso Rhino is able to lug more stuff in one go, the Ford Ranger is better to drive and the Toyota Hilux has a superior record in terms of reliability, the L200 is ruthlessly fit for purpose at a great price.
