Car of the Year Awards 2023: Best plug-in hybrid for big families
The best plug-in hybrid cars offer a long all-electric range, reducing fuel consumption, emissions and tax bills. Yet they must still drive well and not compromise on practicality...
Hyundai Santa Fe 1.6 T-GDi Plug-in Hybrid 4WD Premium
It is often the case with plug-in hybrids that compromises have to be made over the regular versions because the batteries have to go somewhere. In many seven-seaters, that place is under the boot, leading to the two rearmost seats being lost. But not in the case of the Hyundai Santa Fe, which has space not just for your extended family but also a 13.8kWh battery that gives up to 36 miles of electric range.
The closely related Kia Sorento manages the same feat, but that car is available only in one high-spec trim that costs £10k more. And it’s not as if the Santa Fe, in our chosen Premium trim, is lacking in equipment or plush materials.
True, the Lexus NX is better still in terms of interior quality and running costs, but even that car can’t match the remarkable space, practicality and seating flexibility offered by the Santa Fe.
