Car of the Year Awards 2023: Best plug-in hybrid for value
The best plug-in hybrid cars offer a long all-electric range, reducing fuel consumption, emissions and tax bills. Yet they must still drive well and not compromise on practicality...
Audi A3 40 TFSIe Sport

Most of the other contenders in this category are seriously expensive, but the Audi A3 Sportback 40 TFSIe shows that you can get a premium-badged example with a competitive electric range and low emissions for a reasonable price.
We recommend entry-level Sport trim in this classy family hatchback, because it not only comes with all the equipment you’re likely to need but is also the only version with a long enough electric range to drop it into the 8% benefit-in-kind tax band (the same as the Lexus NX), reducing the size of company car drivers’ monthly salary sacrifices compared with bigger-wheeled S line trim (12%).

While the A3 isn’t as spacious or plush inside as the NX and the TFSIe’s boot space is compromised by the battery beneath the floor (compared with regular A3s), this does everything that you’d expect of a really good plug-in hybrid, but without the usual high price.
