Audi has kept things simple with the A6 Avant’s engine lineup: you can opt for either a 2.0-litre petrol or a 2.0-litre diesel.
Our favourite is the TDI diesel, because it also comes assisted by mild hybrid technology. Thanks to a 1.7kWh battery, the engine gets an extra boost and it allows the A6 Avant to travel short distances on electric power alone at low speeds.
Not only does that mild hybrid power help to bring down your fuel bills, but it also gives the engine enough oomph to feel effortless when you’re zipping down a country road.
Opting for that engine in mid-spec S line trim gets you some sporty styling, 19in wheels and stiffer sports suspension, on top of the standard matrix LED headlights, heated front seats, four-zone climate control and adaptive cruise control – that combination will save you £12,485.
If petrol power is more your speed, you’ll find that the acceleration on the A6 Avant isn’t quite as urgent compared with the diesel version, but it still feels sufficiently capable.
For a saving of up to £14,550, you can kit your petrol-powered A6 Avant out with Black Edition trim, which is similar to S line, but brings darkened features including privacy glass.
Or, for the biggest saving of up to £16,560, you can opt for mid-spec S line trim alongside the petrol engine. This listing also comes equipped with Audi’s optional technology pack, which includes a premium Bang & Olufsen sound system, a 360-degree camera, a head-up display and some additional parking aids.
