Nissan has released the first images of the next-generation X-Trail family SUV, as part of a shake-up of its model-range and brand strategy.

The new model has relatively conservative styling with a long bonnet and an imposing grille. Like the current X-Trail seven-seater, it will have plenty of competition from the likes of the Hyundai Santa Fe and Kia Sorento to the Mazda CX-60 and Peugeot 5008.

There are vey few details about the new model yet, aside from confirmation that it will have the option of Nissan's ePower range extender hybrid system, the latest version of which is currently used in the Nissan Qashqai. This engine differs from a traditional hybrid because its petrol engine only charges the battery, never driving the car. The battery powers an electric motor that drives the car, giving it instant acceleration similar to an electric car.

It's a good stepping stone towards a pure electric model because it never needs to be plugged in to recharge the batteries.

The current X-Trail is offered with ePower technology, but if it gets the system from the latest Qashqai, it will provide a boost of power, refinement and efficiency.

The X-Trail was revealed alongside the 2027 Nissan Juke EV, which will be sold alongside the current version at first. While the Juke EV is expected to go on sale in the UK in 2027, there is no official word yet on whether, or not, the new X-Trail will actually come to the UK because the current X-Trail was only introduced in 2022 and it was given a refresh earlier in 2026.
