Used Audi RS4 Avant

7. Audi RS4 Avant

For many, this hot version of the practical Audi A4 Avant estate is the ultimate in understated performance. A vehicle that stealthily slips by unnoticed, yet has sports car-baiting performance on tap with a slight prod of the accelerator. Its quattro four-wheel drive chassis will flatter any driver, and there's ferocious power from its 4.2-litre V8 engine. Of course, as with any Audi RS car, it doesn’t come cheap – but if you can afford it, the Audi RS4 Avant is a great practical performance car.

Used Jaguar XFR-S

The Jaguar XFR-S is a bit of a beast, especially in Sportbrake estate car form, which weighs close to two-tonnes. To overcome its mass, though, there's a supercharged 5.0-litre V8 that puts out 542bhp, allowing the XFR-S to knock on the door of 186mph – on a track or a de-restricted autobahn, of course. But what really caps it off is just how easy the XFR-S is to live with; it’s a doddle to potter around in, and there’s plenty of luggage room for weekends away. It's a more interesting alternative to the more obvious BMW M5 not least due to the Jaguar's thunderous exhaust tone.

5. Porsche 911

Used Porsche 911 Coupe (05-12)

If daily dependability and usability are essential in your sports car you’ll struggle to better the Porsche 911. Not only does its six-cylinder engine deliver exhilarating performance and a fantastic engine note, but every 911 offers incredible poise that makes it one of the finest sports cars out there. The downside is that, because it's so capable and useable every day, it's hugely popular and therefore commands a high price. A £35k budget means you'll need to settle for a much older example than almost every other car on this list. Still, find a 911 with a full-service history from a Porsche main dealer or specialist, and you shouldn't have too much to worry about. Go for a facelifted car for an improved engine with a bit more power over earlier models.
