Used Volkswagen Golf R 2016-2020 reliability review

With its superb performance and four-wheel-drive system, the VW Golf R is one of the quickest, most capable hot hatches out there

What should I look for in a used Volkswagen Golf?

When viewing a used car, always follow our used car buying checklist.

Although the Golf R is a hoot on open roads, it will of course have been subjected to the ravages of supermarket car parks and school runs, so check the extremities of the car for any scuffs or dents. Look at those handsome alloy wheels for any kerb damage – they are susceptible to scraps and repair can be expensive.

Is a used Volkswagen Golf reliable?

The Volkswagen Golf R is generally reliable, but it isn't without its faults.

In our 2023 What Car? Reliability Survey, the standard, petrol Golf came 18th out of 29 cars in the family car category, with a reliability score of 90.4%. Based on that, this generation of Golf R should be more reliable than the latest Golf R, but less reliable than the current Ford Focus RS and Toyota GR Yaris.

As a car brand, Volkswagen placed 22nd out of 32 manufacturers featured. Its overall reliability rating of 90.2% makes it a more reliable brand than Renault, but less reliable than Ford and Toyota.
