The Volvo XC60 is a fine family car. It’s practical, classy, good to drive and scores highly for safety. By Steve Huntingford
Despite its big wheels, elevated ground clearance and butch looks, the XC60 isn’t a serious off-roader, but more of a classy, rugged family-ferrying crossover.
There are two five-cylinder diesel models available, both of which give decent performance, and (with the less powerful unit) the choice of two- or four-wheel drive. The T6’s turbocharged petrol engine has masses of oomph, but it's far too costly to buy and run for us to recommend it.
The range starts with SE trim, which brings alloy wheels, rear parking sensors and four electric windows, plus climate and cruise controls, automatic wipers and Bluetooth. SE Lux is the most luxurious trim, with leather upholstery and an electrically adjustable driver’s seat, while R-Design is the sporty option, including a beefy bodykit, sports seats and a unique chassis with stiffer suspension.
Across the range, you can add the Nav pack, which adds voice-activated sat-nav and an upgraded audio system.
