“I’ve wanted to buy a premium SUV for some time now, because I need more space for children, dogs, bicycles and everything else.
“The Velar has five roomy, split-folding seats and a huge boot, so it’s very practical.
“The panoramic roof makes its interior lighter and airier; some cars can feel quite oppressive, but not here, especially with the cream leather interior. That’s a negative with Audis: they tend to have black or grey interiors.
“Range Rovers already had great interiors, but the Velar moves things on a couple of notches with a new infotainment system and sat-nav and a second touchscreen. It makes some other new cars already look dated. Teslas have a huge 17.0in touchscreen that controls everything, but it looks like it’s just been nailed on; the Velar’s is far better implemented.
“I would consider the smaller four-cylinder diesel engines. I doubt they’re as smooth as the big V6, but they’ll still be good and far better for tax and fuel economy.
“The big downside with the Velar is that the price can quickly run away with itself; when I specced it how I’d like, the price got well into the £60,000s, which is a bit much, really.”

“I’ve had my Mini estate for years, but now I have a toddler I need a bigger car for her and all her stuff.
“The Velar has large door openings, which would make it far easier to get her in and out, and the rear seats are roomy. In fact, there’s comfortable head and leg room for me at 6ft 6in tall. That surprised me, because the car is quite squat with a low roofline.
“The Velar’s boot is absolutely enormous – it’s plenty big enough for family days out – even though the car looks quite compact. And the door sills open as part of the door, so you won’t get muck on your trousers when getting in.
“The key interior touchpoints, such as the controls and door handles, have a real quality feel to them. Clearly a lot of effort has gone into the fit and finish.
“I’m especially impressed by the touchpads on the steering wheel that change depending on which function you’re using.
“Safety is paramount for me, so I’m pleased the Velar has lots of electronic safety aids and airbags.”
