America is known for many things, and a lot of them are big: big states, big homes and big roads for big cars – and there will soon be one more big American car arriving on our shores in the form of the Jeep Recon, but it’ll look to take on the UK market with all-electric power.

Indeed, the Recon electric SUV will take on the likes of the Land Rover Defender when it arrives next year, and it’ll be positioned as an electric alternative to the off-road-ready Jeep Wrangler. The Recon will be based on parent company Stellantis’s STLA Large platform, which is the same tech that’s set to underpin the Alfa Romeo Giulia EV and the Recon’s stablemate, the Jeep Wagoneer S.

Powered by a 100kWh battery pack, the Recon is estimated to be able to travel a maximum of 250 miles on a single charge, depending on the trim. However, that's based on the US's strict EPA test cycle, and will likely translate to around 330 miles under our WLTP regime. That's further than the the Mercedes G-Class, which can officially manage 293 miles from its larger 116kWh battery.

Thanks to its 4oo-volt tech, the Recon should also be able to charge at speeds of up to 160kW.

As you might have guessed, the Recon will come with four-wheel drive, and given its positioning as an electric alternative to the Wrangler, it’ll be designed to be highly capable off-road.

Thanks to its dual-motor setup, the Recon pumps out 641bhp and can spring from 0-60mph in just 3.7sec. That's no mean feat for a car of its size, and it's even marginally quicker than the mighty Land Rover Defender V8 Octa. Torque is rated at 620 lb ft.

The Recon will receive Jeep's Selec-Terrain off-road driving system, which allows drivers to switch through modes depending on where they're driving. As standard, there are Auto, Sport, Snow and Sand modes, while higher-spec models come with a Rock mode and 33in tyres that provide 9.4in of ground clearance.

While the recently-revealed Jeep Compass was confirmed to be sold with both pure electric and combustion options, the American firm has said that both the Recon and the Wagoneer S will be EV-only – however, it didn't rule out other fuel options for the Recon in the future.

Outside, it’s evidently inspired by the rugged styling of the Wrangler, which gets an upright, boxy stance, chunky cladding and a squared-off front end. Like that car, the Recon will come with removable doors and an optional open-top design for added outdoor experience.

Inside, there's a new 14.5in infotainment touchscreen, through which you control most of the car's functions, alongside a 12.3in digital driver's display. Wireless phone charging is available as an option, and there's physical controls for the volume and audio system.

The Jeep Recon is due to go into production in early 2026, and will likely arrive late that year. Prices have yet to be confirmed, but we expect the Recon will sit below the Wagoneer S, so expect to pay around £75,000. That significantly undercuts the electric Mercedes G-Class, but you’ll pay less for a petrol-powered Land Rover Defender 110.
