More than 40% drive on illegal tyres

More than 40% of drivers are driving with illegal tyres, according to a new survey.

The survey by discount firm MyVoucherCodes revealed that 41% of respondents admitted to currently driving with tyres that had less than the minimum legal tread-depth.

Motorists said the main excuse for driving with illegal tyres was the expense of buying new ones.

The law requires a minimum of 1.6mm of tread across the central three-quarters of the tyre, around its entire circumference.

Drivers who fail to comply face an increased risk of being involved in an accident, as well as a fine of up to 2500 and three penalty points for each illegal tyre.

It is recommended that you change your tyres with a 3mm minimum tread-depth, because this is the critical measurement where stopping distances begin to increase.
