The supermini segment is a crowded place, so competition is fierce. The current class leader is the Skoda Fabia, but if that doesn’t do it for you, then you can’t go far wrong with the Clio, Renault’s second-smallest car.

7. Competitive space
The Clio offers as much space as its rivals, with a competitive 300-litre boot and 60/40 split folding rear seats. They don’t fold completely flat, but there’s easily enough room in the load bay for a family’s weekly grocery haul.
Crashing isn’t the first thing you want to think about when buying a new car, but safety should be. The Clio’s six airbags, anti-whiplash headrests and Isofix child seat fixtures, as well as standard electronic stability control, should give you peace of mind.
5. Attractive infotainment
Go for a higher-spec Clio and you’ll get an attractive, easy-to-use infotainment screen. We love its blend of versatility and ease of use, so we think it’s worth the extra money.
4. Plenty of adjustment
You won’t struggle to find a comfortable driving position in the Clio. The steering wheel adjusts for reach and height and there are a number of driving seat adjustments you can make.
3. Engaging handling
The Clio is one of the more entertaining cars in its class to drive, and although it can’t match the Ford Fiesta’s fun factor, its smiles per mile ratio is a healthy one.
2. Decent equipment
You get a lot for your money in the Clio, with even entry-level cars having USB connectivity, heated and electrically adjustable door mirrors, LED daytime running lights and cruise control.
1. Smooth diesel
The 1.5-litre diesel engine is the one to get; it’s smoother than the diesel engines of most rivals and gets smoother still after a few minutes’ warming up. Get it in the right trim level and you’ve got a seriously good car on your hands.
What about buying used?
Renault’s weak residual values are bad for new buyers, but they do mean that the Clio is an inexpensive used car.
Renault hasn’t got the best reliability record, having finished 21st out of 27 manufacturers in our most recent reliability survey, but repairs are usually fairly inexpensive.
You’ll pay around £9500 for a decent three-year-old Clio 1.5 dCi in Dynamique S Media Nav Energy trim, which will get you a slick infotainment system and the lovely smooth 1.5-litre diesel engine. Make sure you take a thorough test drive, though.
