Audi A4 updated with new equipment and styling

There's not a lot wrong with the current Audi A4 – it's our favourite executive car and a former What Car? Car of the Year. In fact, even against strong rivals including the Mercedes C-Class, BMW 3 Series and Jaguar XE, we reckon it's a top choice for both private buyers and company car drivers.

Audi isn't resting on its laurels, though, having announced a number of changes to the both the A4 saloon and its Avant estate sibling for their third year on sale. These changes include new, more aggressively styled front and rear bumpers for SE and Sport models, as well as larger side skirts and a new rear spoiler for the estate. Sport models additionally receive new 18in alloy wheels as standard, while SE models retain 17in wheels.

Moving up the range, S line and Black Edition versions of the A4 receive a new grille, giving the car a more aggressive look. S line cars also get a wheel upgrade, to new 19in alloys. A new paint colour, Turbo Blue, is also available exclusively on Black Edition models.

Inside, SE cars come with a larger 7.0in driver information display in the instrument cluster, as well as sat-nav and automatically folding door mirrors. Sport models receive adjustable lumbar support for the driver and front pasenger, while S line and Black Edition cars gain automatic high beam assistance as standard.

No changes have been made to the A4's engine line-up, meaning the smooth but economical 2.0-litre diesel Ultra 190 remains our recommended choice.

This refreshed A4 will go on sale towards the end of this year. Audi hasn't revealed official prices yet, but a slight increase on the current car's starting price of £27, 815 (and £29,255 for the estate) is expected. The A4 is currently priced competitively next to the 3 Series – an edge that Audi won't want to lose with this update.

The best (and worst) executive cars 2018

Got your mind set on a comfortable and luxurious executive car? These are our favourites, plus we've named the models you should avoid at all cost.

10. Mercedes-Benz C-Class

The C-Class is one of the three main choices when it comes to executive cars, the other two, naturally, being the Audi A4 and BMW 3 Series – both of which feature further up this list. The C-Class does a lot well, too – it's got a superb interior, most engines have low CO2 emissions and you get plenty of toys as standard. The entry-level C 220d diesel makes the most financial sense, though, and pulls strongly from low revs.

Our pick: C 220d SE

Taking on the big German brands in the executive car market is a big task, but Jaguar has made a good first impression with its junior saloon, the XE. It's offered with a strong range of engines, and rewards keen drivers with excellent steering and sharp handling. It's let down a little when it comes to cabin quality, but a generous equipment list should entice company car drivers.

Our pick: 2.0d 180 Prestige

Mondeo Man has grown up and now expects more from his car than ever before. Fortunately, the Mondeo has grown up too, and now offers a comfortable driving experience and spacious interior to match its Germanic rivals. We'd go for the mid-range 2.0-litre diesel engine, and pair it with Zetec trim which gets you everything you're going to want, including a heated windscreen, rear electric windows and a ski hatch in the rear for carrying longer items.

Our pick: 2.0 TDCi 150 Zetec
