True MPG: most efficient family carsImage 1 of 12

It's not often possible to achieve the official fuel economy figures stated in new car brochures, so to help you find out just how far your car will go on a tank of fuel, we've tested them in our True MPG tests.

To ensure accuracy and repeatability, we use strictly controlled laboratory conditions, but the tests are based on a real-world route that takes in town, rural and motorway driving.

The results reflect the sort of fuel economy you can expect to get if you drive gently and stick to speed limits, but don't resort to any unrealistically slow acceleration or special hypermiling techniques.

Here we reveal the 10 most efficient family cars we've tested so far – plus the one that used the most fuel.
