The new Toyota Land Cruiser is fantastic off-road and should be very reliable too. It’s very expensive, though, and if you won’t ever venture off the beaten path you're likely to be better off with one of the more comfortable and luxurious alternatives.
The trim
Invincible trim comes with black leather upholstery, dual-zone air conditioning, heated and ventilated seats, a panoramic reversing camera, a digital driver’s display, 20in alloy wheels, a sunroof and plenty of off-road gizmos.
The engine
This four-cylinder 2.8-litre diesel engine is a pretty gruff and agricultural beast. It’s not quick and it’s not particularly efficient, but you can be confident it has enough grunt to haul a fully-loaded car up a mountain – and it can tow up to 3,500kg.
