Small SUVs are big business in the UK right now. They're among the most popular cars on sale, and include previous What Car? Car of the Year winners, such as the Nissan Qashqai, as well as current class favourites like the Seat Ateca.
Cars in this market are perfectly suited for families. They offer the high-set driving position, practicality and muscular looks of fully-fledged SUVs, but usually without the high purchase price or running costs.
We've collected together our favourite small SUVs below, along with some that you should avoid. If you're considering buying any of these cars, then make sure you visit our new car buying service first.
The best small SUVs
10. Kia Soul
The Soul is more of a jacked-up hatchback than a fully fledged SUV. That said, it offers most of the benefits buyers in this market are looking for. It's competitively priced and its interior is roomy and well equippped. All of the Soul's engines could be more efficient and quiet, though, and there's plenty of wind noise at motorway speeds.
Our pick: 1.6 petrol connect
9. Audi Q3
The Audi Q3 is a premium choice in this market, and if you're going for a top-end version, it can be a pricey option as well. That said, it's good to drive and relatively inexpensive to run, and its engines are mostly smooth. The interior is also of a high quality.
Our pick: 2.0 TDI 150 SE
Compact on the outside but spacious inside, the Vitara represents the best of what a small SUV should offer. There's lots of standard kit on offer and it's relatively practical, but the emissions from its petrol engines are unusually high for a car in this class.
Our pick: 1.6 petrol SZ4
