3. Porsche 911 (1993-1998)

Porsche 911 (993) driving

As the last 911 to feature an air-cooled engine – and considered by many to be the most desirable 911 of all – the 1993-1998 Porsche 911 (also known as the 993) is a very charismatic car. Even if all you can find for this sort of money is one of the less sought-after Tiptronic automatic versions, it'll be worth the cash because it's a surefire classic. This version of the 911 is a fabulously involving drive, unfettered by modern electronics to dilute the experience.

2. Porsche Macan

Porsche Macan S front

Although it isn’t the most spacious SUV around, few can come close to matching the Porsche Macan's sublime driving experience, especially in lightning-quick Turbo guise. It’s even better than the pricier Cayenne and, what’s more, the Macan is a more manageable size, not to mention its lower price and running costs. In short, it is a great used buy if you want a Porsche and need the practicality of an SUV.

1. Porsche Cayman (2013-2016)

Porsche Cayman GTS driving

Porsche made this generation Cayman (the 2013-2016 Porsche Cayman) for just four years before it was replaced with a new, more efficient – but less soulful – four-cylinder version. That makes it worth buying, simply to experience the glorious howl of one of Porsche’s flat-six engines. The rest of the driving experience is, as you’d expect, exceptional, but try to find one with the optional-from-new adaptive suspension; without it, the ride is properly firm.

Oh, and if you've got the close to the full £50,000 to spend, go for a GTS model. It's the quickest variant – bar the track-focused GT4 – and is incredibly thrilling to drive.

We found: 2015 Porsche Cayman GTS, 25,760 miles, £49,990
