Car of the Year Awards 2023: Best estate car interior
While estates lack the fashionable status of SUVs, they’re more practical. But an estate also needs to be a pleasure to spend time in, and easy to live with beyond the simple virtue of space...
BMW 5 Series Touring 520d M Sport

If the thought of an estate car feels a bit unromantic – a bit beige apron and pencil behind the ear, perhaps – the BMW 5 Series Touring will change your mind. With the appetite to wolf down eight carry-on suitcases below its parcel shelf and three-way split rear seats to help if you have more to shift, it’s definitely up for a bit of hard work. But as soon as it’s loaded, the effort evaporates.

You see, no estate car has a more inviting interior. It provides the driver with a perfect sitting position and surrounds them with a brilliantly laid-out dashboard to put them at ease on a long trip.
The Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate looks glitzier inside, but it’s not as well built and the materials aren’t as plush. What’s more, the BMW infotainment system is more user-friendly than any rival’s. If the 5 Series Touring didn’t cost so much more than the Skoda Superb, it could win overall.
